The origins of WD3 were formed in a small business running in the upstairs lounge room of the Coogan brothers sometime in 2002. This business ended up with around 70 customers in 2004 at which point a decision to become more serious was made. (Funnily enough, this business was named “Scrooge Hosting” with a motto of “saving every last penny from the internet just for you”!)
As a result of that decision, White Dog Green Frog started in 2004, having been named at 7:06am one winter morning when a white poodle strolled into the kitchen proudly carrying his toy green frog. Initially, we started with a vision of being a cheap web provider, as many of the providers around at the time were hugely expensive. Another part of our vision was to demystify and remove some of the fear that many small business operators felt towards the web at that time; we wanted to make good quality web technology available to all and were excited about it.
In 2005, we also started working with clients to deliver Mambo (later to become Joomla!) content managed sites. We developed our first cinema site around that time, something that was to become more popular over time.
Our hosting services also matured and changed. While we started as a reseller of a small US-based provider, we quickly outgrew them and in late 2004 set up our own first dedicated server. We developed a hardening methodology in concert with industry expert services and began to offer secure hosting as a standard product. We also started to realize that many customers came to us looking for a better hosting experience, having been with other providers previously. Interestingly, we still have a surprising number of companies with us from our early days.
Having a background as commercial system administrators working for large corporates, our servers were always designed to be highly reliable and secure. Having seen what happened in other companies, our philosophy is that the more reliable and secure our servers were, the less it would cost to maintain them, and of course, we also need to spend less time on support if everything just works.
At the time of writing this page in 2015, we have around 1500 customers on our books and something like 2500 sites spread over 12 servers both here in Australia (Sydney and Brisbane) and in the US (Atlanta and Dallas).
More recently, we have started providing a premium service to eCommerce customers running Magento, which is notorious for poor performance and slow webpage loads. We’ve had a lot of fun greatly speeding page timings, using the flexible and powerful Amazon AWS hosting system to entirely separate each business.
Justin sadly passed away in late 2006, but his crazy sense of humour and ability to effortlessly manage 6 projects at once will always be remembered with gratitude and love.
Goose the English Staffordshire Terrier was a founding member of our team. In charge of team morale, credit assessments, and soft toy destruction, he was a beloved part of our company for 4 years. Goose couldn’t be considered a Casanova but his charm and warmth more than made up for lack of looks.
Goose moved to New York in 2009 and though much loved, sadly succumbed to an illness some time later. (The rumours of his illness being related to alcohol are totally false). His habit of suddenly popping his head onto your knee when he wasn’t getting enough attention will always be remembered.
