Moving a website can be a major trauma, let us make it easy for you with our years of experience
To move a website, we need two main things from you:
- Domain registrar password to manage your domain so we can login and re-point (“re-delegate”) it
- Control panel username and password so we can grab your website contents and check usage
Some other things we may need to know – we can usually find these out from the above:
- Where your email is hosted, how you read it, and what email accounts you have
- How much bandwidth (monthly data) and how much disk storage your site uses
- What control panel you currently use (we use cPanel, so it’s the easiest)
If you’re thinking of moving web hosts, give us a call or email so we can discuss your needs.
It will save time if you already have the above information – especially the domain password and the control panel access (at top).
As some background…
Web hosting consists of 3 parts:
- DNS (“Domain name service”)
- Web (also sometimes called “HTTP”)
- Email – Email send, receive and “post office”-type storage
Any or all of these can be moved separately from your existing provider or to a new provider. Some people use us just for web hosting, others use us just for email; many use us for all threes of the above. One way or another, to host a website and email you’ll need all three services from somebody.
Your domain registrar
The “domain registrar” is the domain registration company that provides your domain registration. Some examples might be netRegistry, GoDaddy, Melbourne IT, etc.
We will need the username and password for your registrar to move your domain from one to another. At the same time, for ease of management, you can opt to move your domain to us to simplify ongoing registration and management. This isn’t mandatory.
Moving email without losing any
Moving email can be tricky as not all control panels provide the features we need to move your email simply (the specific feature is “Change MX”). Talk to us about your needs and we can work out what method we can use. Some people don’t receive much email, which makes it easier; others receive hundreds and even one lost message is a huge business continuity issue.
Moving an eCommerce site
Moving an eCommerce site is often complex as it can involve both active transactions and email, as well as often a very large database which can be hard to move simply because of it’s size. We have expertise in the area of moving eCommerce sites and there are a number of strategies appropriate depending on the urgency of the move and other factors. Generally, we are able to simplify the move of even large sites with our team handling all the heavy lifting for you.
We run our eCommerce sites in the Amazon AWS cloud because of the incredible flexibility and variety of services they offer. This flexibility allows us to configure your site to handle all sorts of performance peak periods without incurring the costs of running heavy hardware over the long haul.
